Rolling stock that are procured at time X based on specific requirements are put into operation at time X plus 4 to 7 years. The vehicles will then be used from 20 up to 40 years, possibly adapted to the changing conditions, technical development and customer expectations. In most cases, the rolling stock will undergo a refit or modernisation in the middle of their life.
