Accelerator for user-oriented harmonisation of rolling stock

Values and Goals

What do we strive for?

The EuroSpec initiative has the ambition to achieve a significant cost reduction and an overall improvement of the reliability, availability and quality of trains.

This will be achieved by delivering a complete set of harmonised functional and technical specifications for passenger trains within a common specification structure. In this way variation of the operators requirements will be reduced in variation, the operators focus will be mainly on functional requirements and the industry-level solutions will be narrowed down in order to strive for as many basic architectures and modules as possible.

In order to achieve our goals, the EuroSpec initiative will operate as a lean project with efficient and transparent decision making principles. Just with this approach our partners are able to support this initiative.

EuroSpec can be seen as an accelerator for European harmonisation in the voluntary precompetitive domain.

What needs do we fulfil?

There is a widely supported need for the EuroSpec initiative because

  • The manufacturers suffer a lot from the wide differences in procurement processes and the structure and content of specifications.
  • The railway operating companies are dissatisfied with the length of time and the needed capacity in order to procure a train and the subsequent teething problems. So, EuroSpec does all its work for the end-users: the passengers and our railway staff (staff on trains and in workshops). They all expect new solutions that will fit better with environment of today’s and tomorrow’s environment.

What are our values and main principles?

In order to achieve our goals, the EuroSpec initiative will operate as a lean project with efficient and transparent decision making principles. With this approach our partners are able to support this initiative. The following common values and main principles are part of the EuroSpec approach:

  • Fast & efficient (focus points, small organization and working groups, short decision making processes) Pragmatic & business focus
  • Low-cost
  • Relying on members’ support, experiences and expertise
  • Maximum in-kind approach (shared work load)
  • Transparent (processes, deliverables, exchange with industry)
  • End-user oriented focus.
  • Independent of other European railway associations
  • Focus on European (end-) users, market structure, regulations and Standards
