EuroSpec is focussing on the domain of passenger rolling stock for use on the heavy railway network in Europe.

EuroSpec is not a standardisation body, but an organisation that provides common, functional and harmonised specifications for rolling stock system and components from the perspective of European Railway operators. In the European standardisation process the harmonisation from users perspective is important for the success of the final sector standard.

CEN, CENELEC and ETSI are the mandated standardisation bodies in Europe (ligned with the Regulation(EU) No 1025/2012). These define common standards based on the expertise from manufacturers, users and other knowledgeable experts from the Member States. EuroSpec does deliver contribution to the European standardisation process by collecting and harmonising the specifications form operators’ perspective.
EuroSpec will not duplicate work of existing CEN or CENELEC standardisation groups. An EuroSpec can be a starting point of a new EN-standard.

EuroSpec signed a MoU with UNIFE. The draft final versions of a new or revised EuroSpec is systematically commented by UNIFE-members.

The outlook
Operators have shown to be able to reduce their own specific requirements by making use of the first Eurospecs;
For a sustainable railway sector further harmonisation is needed:
- Increase of reliability by sharing good practice and experience;
- Simplification of tender process in time and effort;
- Increase cost efficiency by standardised products
- Smooth adaptation of innovations by harmonised approach
EuroSpec fills a gap in the current standardisation landscape by harmonising the requirements from the train operators perspective; EuroSpec is a means to obtaining mature products needed to offer excellent products to the end customers.
